Why Care for the Disadvantaged

God loves the disadvantaged

  • “The poor and needy seek water but there is none; their tongues fail for thirst. I, the Lord will hear them; I, the Lord God of Israel will not forsake them.” Isaiah 41:17
  • “ He will bring justice to the poor of the people; He will save the children of the needy; and He will break in pieces the oppressor.” Psalm 72:4

God identifies with the disadvantaged

  • Matthew 25:31-46 makes it clear that serving the “least” is serving Jesus. “Inasmuch as you did it for the least of these My brethen, you did it to Me.”
  • “He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord and He will pay back what he has given.” Proverbs 19:17

The church is expected to care for the disadvantaged

  • “And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do.” Galatians 2:9-10
  • “Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods and divided them among all, as anyone had need.” Acts 2:44-45

God blesses those who have concern for the disadvantaged

  • “Blessed is the man who considers the poor. The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive. He will be blessed on the earth; you will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.  The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; you will sustain him on his sickbed.”  Psalm 41:1
  • A man who gives to the poor will not lack.” Proverbs 28:27

God offers generosity to the disadvantaged and uses it as a way back from the path of sin. Generosity shows a change of heart and perhaps helps change the heart

  • “Break off your sins by being righteous and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor.” Dan 4:27
  • John the Baptist came to prepare the way for Jesus. After he had preached to the people, they asked, “What shall we do?” His response focused on acts of charity and justice. “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise… collect no more (taxes) than what is appointed to you… do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely.”  Luke 3:8-14

God presents concern for the disadvantaged as a gauge for our Christian walk

  • “But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” I John 3:17
  • “If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also, faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James 2:18
